Helping Negri folk get on the Net

BY THE end of this month, those in small towns and even some rural areas in Negri Sembilan will be able to access the internet for free — thanks to the 1NS Wireless City project, an ambitious venture by the state government to provide broadband services.

The project is part of the state’s RM14.1mil ICT expansion plan which includes an integrated network infrastructure — 1NS*Net — that will allow state agencies to access and share information through a common platform.

Both projects are collaborative efforts between the state and Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM).

Speaking to reporters after the launch of the projects at the Royal Bintang Resort and Spa here recently, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said the first phase of the 1NS Wireless City project would encompass seven locations.

“People in Seremban, Seremban 2, Nilai, Senawang, Rantau, Port Dickson and Tampin will be able to access the internet for free in public areas like parks, restaurants and shopping malls by the end of the month, Mohamad told reporters after the launch of the projects at a resort in Seremban recently,

“You just need to ensure that the area you are in has coverage,” he said.

To enjoy the service which uses Streamyx broadband wireless technology, users will have to sign up for a free account which will enable them to access the Internet when they are in the “covered” zones.

Mohamad said the service was timely as internet access was now a necessity and it was imperative to close the digital divide.

“The service is free now and if the response is good, we may expand it to other areas in the state,” he said.

The 1NS Wireless City website will also allow Internet users to keep abreast of the latest information and events happening in the state.

Mohamad said the ICT expansion plan was necessary to achieve development targets and also due to its proximity to the Klang Valley.

“In order to be competitive, the necessary infrastructure must be in place to attract potential investors.

“While everyone can benefit from the 1NS Wireless City project, the 1NS*Net programme is aimed at improving efficiency, inter-department communication and productivity in state government agencies,” he said.

TM group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, who commended the state government on its initiative, said the 1NS*Net project would connect some 50 state government offices and combine three separate systems into a single, integrated, fast and secure telecommunications network.
